Conference ‘Inscribed Art in the Late Roman World’
On 15–16 May 2026, the Faculty of History will host the international conference “Inscribed Art in the Late Roman West and Early Medieval Mediterranean Worlds (ca. 284–800 CE)”, organised by Mariana Bodnaruk.
The conference will focus on the epigraphic art of Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages, with particular attention to the relationships between image, text, and material object. The organisers invite participants to reflect on inscriptions appearing on monuments, mosaics, frescoes, coins, seals, ceramics, and everyday objects, as well as their role in shaping political power, religious practices, social identities, and daily life.
The thematic and geographical scope of the conference covers the Late Roman Empire and the regions of the Mediterranean basin, the Caucasus, the Middle East, and parts of Africa.
